New Priest to be Ordained Here June 2
Our new parish priest, Deacon Stefan Djoric, will be ordained here at our church in Steubenville on Sunday, June 2 by His Grace our Bishop Irinej of Eastern America.
Deacon Stefan, 27, is currently finishing his studies for a second master's degree at St. Vladimir's Seminary in New York. He was married last fall to the former Marina Thetford, who grew up in nearby Elwood City, PA, and who is also finishing her studies this May at Boston College. The couple will move into the newly-renovated parish home in Steubenville in the latter part of May. We continue to welcome your donations towards the renovation of the parish home so that it will be ready when they arrive.
Deacon Stefan is from Cacak, Serbia. An accomplished basketball player, he elected to pursue theological studies, first in Serbia and then at St. Vladimir's. He is fluent in English, and he hopes to be able to eventually obtain his doctoral degree. Bishop Irinej regards him highly and is sending him to us with high expectations for his pastoral work here. He and Djakonica Marina were able to visit us on Christmas Day this year, when Deacon Stefan served with Fr. Rade at the Liturgy and they then had a chance to meet some of the parishioners and take a quick tour of our facilities, and have Christmas dinner with the Merick's.
This will be the first ordination to take place in our church since Father Stevo Rocknage, a son of our parish, was ordained here in 1988. The ordination of a priest takes place immediately after the Great Entrance during the Divine Liturgy and is a beautiful and meaningful rite as all those present proclaim: AXIOS! DOSTOJIN! HE IS WORTHY! We are fortunate that the joy of this service will be even greater since it will be the on final Sunday of the Paschal season.
The Hierarchical Divine Liturgy will begin on Sunday, June 2, the 6th Paschal Sunday (of the Blindman) with the greeting and vesting of Bishop Irinej at 9:45 AM. Following the Liturgy and ordination the parish will host a welcoming dinner for Bishop Irinej and for our new priest and popadija in the Lyceum, where everyone will have a chance to meet and welcome them. Everyone is invited to this historic event as we begin a new chapter in the life of our parish.
To help us plan and prepare, we ask that those coming to the ordination and dinner please call the Church Office at 740-282-4463 and leave a message with your name and number of people attending from your party no later than Sunday, May 26.
